European Standard for Protective Gloves

EN 388 evaluates gloves for mechanical risks such as abrasion, cuts, tears, and punctures. Manufacturers must test and certify gloves through independent labs before selling them in Europe.


EN 388 Performance Ratings

Gloves receive performance ratings based on test results:

  • Abrasion Resistance: 1–4

  • Cut Resistance (Coup Test): 1–5

  • Tear Resistance: 1–4

  • Puncture Resistance: 1–4

  • ISO 13997 Cut Resistance (TDM Test): A–F


Why EN 388 Matters

Cuts and abrasions cause the majority of workplace hand injuries. Among them, cuts pose the highest risk. Therefore, accurate testing is essential.

The EN 388:2016 standard uses two cut tests to improve precision:

  1. Coup Test: A rotating circular blade cuts through the glove. The test counts the number of cycles required.

  2. ISO 13997 (TDM-100) Test: A straight blade applies controlled force to determine the glove’s exact cut resistance.

Gloves that pass both tests display two extra markings on their pictogram label. These symbols indicate compliance with both the Coup Test and ISO 13997 standard.
